Daily Voice reported last week that the New City Burger King at 164 South Main Street was closing. Before Burger King, it was a restaurant called Carrol's that also served burgers.
The Burger King closure was a hot topic in Clarkstown Community, a Facebook group devoted to discussing all things Clarkstown, as well as on Daily Voice's Rockland County Community Forum page on Facebook, where the story was shared by nearly 200 readers. Residents said the closure of Burger King reflects a growing problem of businesses closing in New City.
"It's very sad because it existed for a long long time," Nancy Nolan said. "There seems to be a lot of empty stores. I noticed at least five in town today. It scares me that there is a much deeper problem here. So, Burger King is not an establishment that I would frequent but it's closing may have more significance than we realize. There are a lot of empty stores in town...why?
Ira Samuels said Burger King joins Payless, Radio Shack, and The Castle as New City businesses to recently shut its doors.
"Our Clarkstown politicians need wake up to this major issue," Samuels said. "Something is very wrong with this picture."
Other residents had memories of enjoying a burger and fries at Burger King or Carrol's.
"[I'm] upset because it's been there for so long, I have childhood memories there and it's in a main spot in town," Laura Boyd Killeen said. "Excited about the possibility of something new. Nervous about what is going to move in."
Tamber Hunter said she remembered all the birthdays and after school trips to Carrol's and Burger King.
"The kids are missing out," Hunter said. "They will not have that memory that I would never replace. It's great having other options but that place still and will always be a hamburger joint fun. Hope at least another hamburger place can open and bring back fun in New City."
