Ever since Hurricane Maria decimated Puerto Rico she has watched the aftermath from her Piermont home with a growing sense of horror and desperation. Communication with the island is difficult and some families are still nervously waiting to hear from loved ones amid increasingly distressing news reports about shortages of food, water, and vital medications like insulin for diabetics and albuterol for asthmatics.

Never one to sit idly by, Cummins has partnered with Stephanie Shultz, manager of the High Exposure Climbing Gym in Northvale, N.J. to hold a Puerto Rico fundraiser, which both hope will raise $6,000.

All profits for "Climbing for a Cause" will go to Unidos por Puerto Rico, a fund established by Puerto Rico’s first lady, Beatriz Rosselló and supported by Governor Cuomo. The fund will provide aid to the people of Puerto Rico in the short term, and help rebuild the island’s devastated infrastructure in the long term.

The open to the public event will take place Friday, Oct. 13 from 6.30 pm. to 9 p.m. and will include a night of climbing, costumes, and Spanish music. It is open to all ages.

Broadway Pizza in Northvale and Stop & Shop in Orangeburg are both donating food to sell at the event. The entry fee is $25.

The organizers are also hoping people will bring diapers, baby food, feminie products, flashlights and batteries to help in the relief effort.
