It will take place Saturday, Jan. 2, from 6:30-9 p.m., at Casa del Sol, 104 Main St., Nyack.

A poetry slam is a performance poetry competition judged by arbitrarily selected audience members. Where traditional poetry readings are about supporting the poet, poetry slams focus on the interaction between audience and poet. Strong writing and strong delivery are both important.

The Suffern Poetry slam has been in operation since December 2011.

Admission to the slam is $5.

From 5:30-6:30 p.m., there is a poetry workshop that is open to anyone. Doors and sign-ups open at 6:30 p.m. for the slam; poetry starts at 7 p.m.

The event begins with a five-slot open mic. Anyone can sign up; each person gets five minutes. The slam begins immediately after the open mic.

Each poet in the slam gets three minutes to do one original piece, sans costumes, musical accompaniment, props animals, etc.

Anyone can sign up to perform. The first four slam spots are first-come, first-served. The last four spots will be determined randomly from anyone else who wants to compete. Five judges will be chosen from the audience to score the poetry.

The top-scoring poets advance to the second and third rounds. Different pieces are needed for each round.

Parking is free from 6-11 p.m. in the public lots.
