Lucas Candy In Haverstraw Expects Busy Valentine's Day

HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. -- Nick Lucas, the co-owner of Lucas Candy, expects to sell about 500 boxes of chocolate-covered strawberries this Valentine's Day. It's the candy store's most popular seller for the holiday, with nine per box.

Surprisingly, Valentine's Day is not their biggest day of the year -- Easter is -- but still, Lucas said "this weekend will be crazy. A lot of men wait until the last minute."

The Haverstraw business, which has been in operation for 120 years and is known as a Rockland institution, knows what customers want. Other big sellers this time of year include the store's white, dark and milk chocolates, along with chocolate roses and stuffed animals.

In other "sweet" news: Lucas has owned the store with Debbie Bertrand who he came to know 10 years ago when their kids met at the bus stop. She started working at the candy store on Valentine's Day 10 years ago.
