ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- As the weather cools, people are beginning to spend more of their time inside. From warm showers and baths to cleaning dishes after big family meals, this increased time inside can cause indoor water consumption to rise during colder months.
However, with a little foresight and awareness homeowners can minimize their water use to help both their wallets and the environment. Here are six simple ways SUEZ recommends residents can reduce their water usage:
Hop in and hop out: Shortening shower time by a minute or two can save up to 150 gallons of water per month. A short shower also uses less water than taking a bath.
Check for leaks: Silent toilet leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water and run up your bill. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 10 minutes. If the coloring shows up in the bowl (without flushing) you have a leak that should be repaired.
Wash and water: Clean fruits and vegetables in a pot filled with water instead of under an open faucet. Then, reuse the water for house plants or herbs.
Turn off the sink: Shut the faucet off while brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your face. This one tip can lead you to save up to 3,000 gallons of water per year and ensure considerable savings.
Load up: When using the washing machine or dishwasher, make sure it is fully loaded before beginning a cycle. Using the light wash setting on a dishwasher can also clean while saving water.
Swap out: For serious savings, consider replacing outdated toilets, washing machines and shower heads for more water efficient models. Many older fixtures use more than double the water compared to new products, and waste thousands of gallons of water annually.
