ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Rockland is doing what it can to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

County Executive Ed Day announced for the first time that the Rockland County Voluntary Organizations Active In Disaster has been activated.

"Rockland residents have a long tradition of rushing to help," County Executive Ed Day said. "For that, we should all be proud. Now the people and pets of Texas need help and we are on it.

Day said current and former county employees are on the ground in Texas and the Rockland Disaster Medical Assistance Team has been deployed.

"They represent the best of Rockland County," Day said. "This disaster in Texas is truly one of epic proportions. You have all seen the images, but it belies the true story."

Day said his son, Mike, who serves in the Army Special Forces, has been deployed to Texas.

"The Lone Star State needs the help of all of us," Day said.

Donations can be sent to United Way of Rockland, 35 Main Street, 2nd floor, Nyack, NY 10960. Write #HurricaneHarvey on the check.

Hi-Tor Animal Care Center, Inc. is also accepting pets from the flood zone and needs financial support and supplies, including pet food, blankets, and towels, Day said.
