Rockland County Executive Ed Day will present Bill Harris with the Key to the County at the Central Nyack Firehouse on Friday, celebrating his heroic role in stopping Sayfullo Saipov after he ran down eight Manhattan bike riders in a rented Home Depot truck in October, injuring another 11.

On Oct. 31, when Saipov committed his act of terror, Harris said he spotted the terrorist and began to chase in his truck. The 41-year-old father of two proceeded to out of the truck and chased Saipov until law enforcement arrived. Though he says he never got his hands on the terrorist, he kicked guns out of Saipov’s hands and stood over him while police apprehended him.

"It was surreal," he said. "But I knew it was something I had to do, my natural instincts just kicked in."

The ceremony celebrating Harris will be held at noon at the Central Nyack firehouse on Waldron Avenue. It will also be broadcast live at Facebook.com/RocklandGov.
