STONY POINT, N.Y. -- Nancy Mahon is on a mission to improve life for yoga aficionados in Rockland and Bergen Counties.

The former owner of Sanctuary Yoga in New City -- she recently sold it after five years of ownership -- is planning a move to Hawaii but before she goes, she's hoping to do what she can to make sure yoga teachers are more immersed in healing arts.

In October, she created a company called YogaPro Teacher Training whose mission it is to service yoga teachers and healing arts professionals in finding and offering advanced education courses in their medium.

"My goal is to take this amazing cache of holistic practitioners in Rockland and Bergen and give them the outlets to become even better," she said. "Yoga and yoga therapy are cutting edge in the medical industry now and unless you really know what you're doing, you will not be taken seriously by those in the industry."

She is hoping to work with yoga studios in various locations, which, she says, "makes the work diverse and fun for the students."

Mahon just finished up a "Yoga for Breast Cancer" teacher training certification course with a facilitator she brought in from Boston who certified 18 Rockland, Bergen and South Jersey yoga teachers in the same techniques she taught at the Mayo clinic and Boston Medical. "It was very intense, clinical work for the yoga teachers who now have the tools and confidence to work with this population that seems to show up in every yoga class," she said.

Next up is a workshop on "Grief and Yoga" at Sanctuary Yoga Studios at 132 Park Avenue in New City on Dec. 16.

On the lighter side, there's a program on balancing your life and goal setting Jan. 2 at Ma Yoga in Mahwah, N.J. (1029 MacArthur Blvd.) and at Pamper Yourself Yoga in Stony Point (160 Liberty Ave.) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

In addition, Mahon teaches yoga and meditation at both the Stony Point and Mahwah locations.

Classes are open to everyone, not just yoga teachers. "My feeling is if something strikes your interest, you should look into it," said Mahon. " I want to make these programs accessible to everyone and help us all help each other."
