The 6-year-old girl who was killed by a school bus on Friday in Kiryas Joel in Orange County was in the process of moving to the area, according to New York State Police.

Leah Mezzi of Brooklyn was killed when she exited the bus about 11:15 a.m., and proceeded to a south sidewalk and abruptly changed directions and began to cross the street in front of the bus, said Trooper Steven Nevel.

The bus driver did not see her change directions and she was subsequently struck by the front bumper and was pronounced dead at the scene, Nevel said.

The child's family were in the process of moving to Kiryas Joel and had already enrolled the child in the school district, he added.

A funeral was held for Mezzi Friday afternoon.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
