County Legislature, Day Spar Over State Of Emergency After Snowstorm

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Rockland County Legislature’s Public Safety Committee asked County Executive Ed Day on Friday to establish written protocols outlining the procedures for declaring a State of Emergency, prompting Day to declare such measures are already in place.

Legislature Committee Chairman Aron B. Wieder made the issues a priority in the wake of the Feb. 9 snowstorm that dumped up to a foot of snow in some places in Rockland. He said there appeared to be a discrepancy between when Day declared a State of Emergency and when the public was notified – a gap of nearly two hours.

“People need this kind of information if there is an emergency,” Wieder said. “They need to know if they should go out on the roads or if they’re on the roads, to get off the roads.”

Day's office said that the protocols were followed during the storm.

"Media outlets were notified within 10 minutes of the State of Emergency being declared and notification continued on numerous media platforms throughout the day," Day's office said in a statement. "His actions resulted in drivers staying off the roads. As a result, roads were cleared quickly, no major accidents occurred and public safety was maintained, resulting in the rapid suspension of the State of Emergency in only a few hours."

Wieder claimed it took two hours to get the information out to the media.

“This time we were lucky that people didn’t get hurt because they weren’t aware of the State of Emergency,” Weider said. “Next time we might not be so lucky.”
