WHITE PLAINS, N. Y. -- A federal judge in White Plains on Tuesday sentenced an East Greenbush, N.Y., gun dealer to 37 months in prision for illegally trafficking guns with destroyed serial numbers, federal officials said.
Jonathan Cuney, 32, who is a licensed gun dealer from East Greenbush, was also sentenced to two years of supervised probation, according to Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for New York's Southern District. Cuney entered a guilty plea in June.
Bharara said between April 2013 and July 2014, Cuney personally destroyed serial numbers from firearms, and sold 22 of those guns, including to an undercover special agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
“Regulations governing firearms dealers and the sale of firearms are critically important to public safety," Bharara said. "Fortunately, (he) was caught and convicted before more illegal guns could endanger our neighborhoods.”
Bharara said the case was handled out of the White Plains U.S. Attorney's office. He also thanked the New Windsor Police Department for assistance.
