NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- A 22-year-old Newburgh man drowned this weekend while trying out for a summer lifeguard position in Massachusetts, according to multiple media reports

Jack Donald Jakubek was taking part in a training exercise in the Cape Cod town of Orleans early Saturday when he went under the water, media reports said.

His body was found by fire department divers 30 minutes later in about 10-15 feet of water in Pilgrim Lake, media reports said.

Jakubek graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School in Orange County's Central Valley in 2012 and had just graduated from SUNY Cortland, where majored in outdoor recreation and was captain of the men’s swim team, according to a report by The Times Herald-Record.

His death is under investigation by local and state police, The Times Herald-Record story said.

According to the Cape Cod Times, Jakubek was planning to return to SUNY in the fall for graduate school.

The school told the Cape Cod Times that Jakubek was survived by his parents, Mark Jakubek and Jill Legg, and siblings, Anna and Kramer.

Services for Jakubek are being handled by the Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans, Mass.

Plans were not complete as of Monday.
