Man Crashes Through Hedges, Into Patio Bench, Tree In Rockland

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. --  A 59-year-old man's vehicle went off the road and struck hedges, a patio bench and tree before landing on an embankment in Hillcrest on Wednesday, according to Ramapo police.

Police responded to the report of a single-vehicle crash around 11 p.m. and found a vehicle that had crashed into an embankment of trees and shrubs on the south side of East Eckerson Road, just west of Buena Vista Avenue, police said.

The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, appeared to have suffered from a medical episode, police said.

According to police, the 2008 Honda Pilot was traveling west on East Eckerson Road, when it veered to the right at Buena Vista Avenue, narrowly missing a utility pole. It then careened through a row of hedges, into the side yard of the corner house.

The vehicle struck a large A-frame porch swing, lawn ornaments, and an iron patio bench before grazing a large tree, and careening back through hedges, over a railroad tie wall, through a sidewalk, across East Eckerson Road, and crashing into the embankment which brought the vehicle to a stop, police said.

Spring Hill Ambulance and Rockland Paramedics responded and transported the driver to the hospital for treatment, police said.

Officers are continuing to investigate the accident at this time; no traffic citations have been issued.

East Eckerson Road was closed for a short time until the vehicle was removed by a tow truck.
