A Wallkill man posing as a union recruiter was sentenced to one-and-half to three years in state prison for defrauding workers seeking jobs, according to Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler.

Michael Allocca, 58, who pleaded guilty to scheming to defraud in January,  posed as a union recruiter from Laborer’s Union Local 731 and collected $150 each from at least 24 people to whom he had promised union jobs, the DA's office said.

To date, not all of those victims have been identified. In fact, Allocca had no ties to the union. As part of the sentence, Allocca was ordered to pay restitution to all of the victims who had been identified.

“This defendant callously preyed on people desperately seeking employment to support their families,” said Hoovler. “I have made it a priority under my administration to support Orange County’s workers. No one deserves to be victimized while they trying to earn money to support their families. My office regularly works with organized labor to ensure that workers are not victimized.”

Hoovler also thanked the Town of New Windsor Police Department for their investigation and the arrest of Allocca.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Kerry Kolek.
