“Take time to get your flu vaccine – it is the first and most important step in protecting against the flu and its complications,” said Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert.

In a statement released by the county, Ruppert said the Health Department has scheduled flu vaccine clinics from 1-4 p.m. every Friday through Oct. 28 at the Robert Yeager Health Center on the second floor rotunda clinic area in Building A. The center is located on Sanatorium Road in Pomona.

The Friday flu shot clinics are open to county residents ages 9 years and older. No appointments are necessary.

The vaccines will be offered free of charge to people 65 years and older – identification with proof of age is required – but cost $30 for all others. Patients with Medicare and Medicaid must bring their cards. Each patient will be asked to prove their residency by providing a driver’s license or utility bill, according to Ruppert.

During the clinics, the Health Department will be administering quadrivalent flu vaccine, which protects against the four different types of flu virus researchers believe will be the most common this year, according to Ruppert. The vaccine does not contain thimerosal.

For more information on the Friday flu shot clinics, find the Health Department online or call 845-364-2520.

The Health Department has also worked with the Rockland County Office for the Aging and several community agencies to schedule a number of other flu shot clinics.

Those clinics, which will offer the quadrivalent flu vaccine at no cost, are only open to residents ages 65 years and older, Ruppert said.

Anyone considering a flu shot should speak to their doctor beforehand. Those with an allergy to eggs or any of the other ingredients in the vaccine or who may not be feeling well should not receive a flu shot, Ruppert said.

Those who do receive a shot are urged to leave 15 minutes for observation afterward, Ruppert said.
