ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Hevelin Naranjo of Haverstraw, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, surrounded by her family. She was 14.

Naranjo, born in Nyack, on Jan. 17, 2003, was an 8th-grade student at Fieldstone Middle School where she was an excellent student and won numerous awards including making the Principal's Roll every grading period.  

She received the President’s Award for Academic Achievement and the New York State Attorney General’s Triple “C” Award, a program which recognizes the “Character, Courage and Commitment” of New York’s hard-working students. 

A recurring pain in Naranjo's knee eventually led to a diagnosis of osteosarcoma in Oct. 2016. She was admitted to Montefiore Hospital and on Dec. 23, her leg was amputated and she began chemotherapy treatment.

Naranjo received the Sacrament of Confirmation this year at St. Peter’s-St. Mary’s Church. She had many friends and enjoyed music and was learning to play the saxophone. She also played soccer and her favorite team was FC Barcelona “Barca” Soccer Team.

She is survived by her parents, Walter Naranjo and Digna Vasquez; her brother, Romeo Naranjo; her grandmother Digna Calle and grandfather, Segundo Vasquez; close family friends Moises and Nube Minchala, and Jerry Accomando. 

Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 28 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and  6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at George M. Holt Funeral Home, 50 New Main St., Haverstraw. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at St. Peter’s-St Mary’s Church, 115 Broadway, Haverstraw. 

 In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Haverstraw Police Athletic League to assist the family with burial costs.
