STONY POINT, N.Y. —John L. Reilly, 84, of Stony Point, passed away peacefully with his family by his side June 21, 2016.
He was born April 9, 1932, in the Bronx, to John J. and Kathleen (McCarthy) Reilly. He graduated from St. Anthony’s & Cardinal Hayes High School. After high school , he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea as a paratrooper with the 187th Airborne Regiment Combat Team. He earned numerous decorations, including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for Valor.
On Jan. 19, 1957, at St. Pius Church in the Bronx, he married the love of his life Margaret O’Malley.
Reilly joined the NYPD, where he served on patrol in the 41st Precinct in the Bronx. After being promoted to sergeant in 1968. he served in the 26th Precinct. He then went to the citywide anti-crime unit. He spent his last 10 years as anti-crime supervisor in the 30th Precinct. After retiring, he worked security for the Coca Cola Co.
He served as a coach and manager in the Stony Point Little League. He also was an avid paddleball and racquetball player and loved walking Rockland Lake with his pals. He was a member of the NYPD Emerald Society, Rockland County Shields and the Haverstraw Elks.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Peggy (2006), daughter Kathy Mariano and brother Billy.
He is survived by his children, Donna (Brian) Cade of Point Pleasant, N.J., Carol (Hugh) Harold of Stony Point, John (Jamie) Reilly of Stony Point and Michael (Kellyann) of Stony Point; grandchildren, Patrice, Christina, Breanne, Kellie, Molly, Kenny, Kayla, Riley, Jake, Meghan, Ryan, Michael, Matthew and Grace; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Adam, Antonio, Logan, Lorelei and Juliette; sister, Catherine O’Brien; brother, Matthew Reilly; son-in-law, John Mariano' and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Lane, New City, NY 1095.
