Rockland Sheriff's Officer Captain Matthew McCune Of Stony Point Dies

STONY POINT, N.Y. -- Matthew J. McCune, a Stony Point resident who retired as a captain with the Rockland County Sheriff's Department, died on Monday, Sept. 12. He was 56.

The Rockland County Sheriff's Office marked his death in a statement:

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the untimely passing of retired Captain Matthew J. McCune at the age of 56. Captain McCune was a 35-year veteran of the Rockland County Sheriff's Office. He will be greatly missed by his brothers and sisters at the Sheriff's Office. We ask that you please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

McCune joined the Sheriff's Department as a corrections officer in 1981. He began his career in the department's Patrol Division as a patrol officer in 1984. He advanced to sergeant, then lieutenant, then captain -- the rank at which he retired in April 2016, after 35 years with the Sheriff's Department.

McCune also served 20 years on their SWAT team and as a supervisor with the marine and transport units.

He was a member of the Valley Cottage Sportsman Club, the FOP and the Rockland County Sheriff's Deputy Association. He was also an active member of the Boy Scouts of America for over 40 years, as a Scout in Pack 27/Troop 27 Valley Cottage; as program director in Bullowa Day Camp in Stony Point, as advisor to Explorer Post 70 (Law Enforcement-RCSD) and as assistant then Scoutmaster of Troop 61 Stony Point.

McCune was also a board member of the Hudson Valley Council where, in 2013, he received its highest award, the Silver Bear, "in recognition of his leadership and lifelong devotion to Camp Bullowa, a special place that he guarded, preserved and called home," according to information from the funeral home.

He is survived by his parents, John and Marie (Russo) McCune of Valley Cottage; sons Michael and Andrew McCune of Stony Point; brothers John McCune of Mineola and Steven McCune of Nanuet; and nieces and nephews.

McCune was predeceased by his daughter, Meredith.

Visiting hours will be from 3-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16, at the T.J. McGowan Funeral Home, 71 N. Central Highway, in Garnerville. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Immaculate Conception Church, 26 John St., in Stony Point. Internment will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony's Cemetery, 36 West Nyack Rd., in Nanuet.
