Facebook Post About Masked Gunmen Untrue, Clarkstown Police Say

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- A post on Facebook Thursday evening alerting Clarkstown residents that armed gunmen were posing as utility workers and committing crimes is a hoax, according to the Clarkstown Police Department.

Spokesman Officer Peter Walker said the department is receiving calls from concerned citizens who are afraid: "This is NOT happening in our town and no reports have been received by our department or surrounding agencies."

Walker said the department is working to quell the rumors swirling around the fake Facebook post.

"Please don't be alarmed, as this appears to be incorrect information," he added.

The department is telling residents to remain vigilant, as always, but there was no need to be worried or fearful at this time.

They are also asking residents to let their friends, family members, and neighbors know that the posting is fake so unnecessary worry and fear can be avoided.
