Nanuet Man Among Two Charged After Police Find Gun, Drugs In Speeding Stop

A Nanuet man and Washingtonville woman are facing weapons and drug charges after an overnight speeding stop in Orange County.

After a vehicle was stopped for speeding on Freeland Street (Route 40) in Monroe on Friday, Dec. 8th, at 12:28 a.m., a Monroe police officer detected a strong odor of marijuana was detected after a Monroe police officer made contact with the driver, 24-year-old Shamique Occena of Nanuet, police said.

Occena was removed from the vehicle and standardized field sobriety tests were administered. The two passengers were also removed from the vehicle and searched for officer safety.

One of the passengers, 25-year-old Gina Marie Burch of Washingtonville was interviewed and was found to be in possession of a .22 caliber handgun, police said.

A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded numerous Xanax tablets, as well as numerous Ecstasy pills, a large quantity of marijuana and an open container of alcohol, according to police.

Occena was arrested and charged with possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. He was issued numerous traffic summonses, issued an appearanice ticket and released on his own recognizance.

Burch was arrested, charged with criminal possession of a weapon (a felony), two counts of criminal possession of a control substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Burch was arraigned in the Town of Woodbury Court, remanded to Orange County Jail on $4,500 cash bail/$10,000 bond and turned over to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
