A 43-year-old man was killed Wednesday in the crash that led to the hours-long closure of a stretch of I-84 in Orange County, state police said.

Two tractor-trailers and four other vehicles were involved in the crash that resulted in the closure between Exit 5A (Drury Lane/Route 54) and Route 208 (Exit 5) in Orange County from around just before 12:30 p.m. until around 7 p.m.

Christopher Marks of Chester in Orange County was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office, state police said.

At approximately 12:20 p.m., four vehicles (a 2016 White Hyundai Sante Fe, a 2016 Freightliner tractor-trailer, 2014 Mitsibushi Outlander and a 2003 Sprinter van towing a small utility trailer) were stopped in traffic in the left lane of westbound I-84 while the right lane was closed due to an upcoming construction zone.

A fifth vehicle, a 2010 Dodge truck, was slowing in traffic approaching the stopped traffic when it was struck from behind by a sixth vehicle, a 2004 Freightliner tractor-trailer) with the force of the strike causing the Dodge, which was occupied by two adults, to flip over approximately four times before coming to rest in the grassy center median, police said.

The tractor-trailer continued into the rear of the Sprinter van, which was occupied by two adults, including Marks (the passenger), crunching the van into the Mitsibushi, which was occupied by two adults and a 9-year-old boy.

The impact caused the Mitsibushi to crumble underneath the 2016 Freightliner, driven by sole occupant, and push the Freightliner into the 2016 Hyundai Sante Fe, which is occupied by two adults.

Occupants of the Mitsibushi and Sprinter van, including Marks, were trapped inside the mangled vehicles and had to be extracted out.

The injured were taken to area hospitals (Orange Regional Medical Center, St Luke's in Newburgh and Cornwall campuses) including several that were flown to Westchester County by Medivac.

It was in the same area as a serious crash on Monday involving a tractor-trailer. For more on that, click here.
