SHOKAN, N.Y. -- A 16-year-old boy died Wednesday evening after his car left the road at Route 28 and Dubois Road and struck a utility pole, according to New York State Police.

The boy, identified as Damein Kovacs, was driving a gray 2000 Honda Civic westbound when the crash occurred. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene. His 8-year-old passenger was taken to Alliance Hospital in Kingston, treated for minor injuries and released.

Time Warner Cable News reported that Kovacs was a 10th-grade student at Onteora High School and played junior varsity football at Kingston High School; Onteora High School doesn't have a junior varsity program.

Students at the schools remembered Kovacs as a "motivated," "kind" and a "great teammate," according to Time Warner.

State police are continuing to investigate the crash and have not yet said what may have caused the fatal incident. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 845-338-1702.

Friday is a scheduled Superintendent's Day, but the Ulster school district has arranged for counselors to be present at the Middle High School, according to Time Warner, which added that transportation also will be made available for children wishing to utilizing the counseling service.
