MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – An armed Middletown man killed by police Wednesday told authorities that he wanted to die, according to a report by Time Warner Cable News.
Richard Dinneny, 53, who was holding his estranged girlfriend hostage, had called 911, saying he wanted to die and threatening to shoot her and any officers who came to an apartment complex on Overlook Drive, Time Warner Cable News reported.
Police told Time Warner Cable News reporters that Dinneny was shot after he came outside and refused to drop what looked like a semiautomatic pistol.
The pistol turned out to be a pellet gun.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the Time Warner Cable News story said.
