NYSDOT Commissioner Matthew Driscoll announced a $3.3 million project to repair and replace a damaged stone retaining wall on Route 9W in Haverstraw on Monday after the old wall damaged by fallen rock. Work began in the spring, and is expected to last through November.
Preliminary work on the wall has already begun, with the bulk of the construction taking place during the summer months while school is out of session. The temporary barriers currently in place will be removed as part of the scope of the project. Driscoll said the wall will be repaired where possible and entire sections will be replaced, as necessary.
“Weather often impacts our transportation system and we need to remain vigilant in our responsibility to keep highways safe for New York’s residents and visitors,” Driscoll said. “Repairing this stone wall, and all the other road repairs funded by Gov. (Andrew) Cuomo, allows motorists to more safely access the many businesses and neighborhoods along Route 9W.”
While construction work is ongoing, traffic will be maintained on Route 9W with lane shifts during daytime hours and alternating one-way traffic controlled by a temporary traffic signal from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
“The repairs being made to this retaining wall will be important in maintaining the public safety for those who work, live and visit the Town of Haverstraw,” Sen. Bill Larkin stated. “Supervisor Howard Phillips and I have advocated tirelessly to ensure that this project would be completed as soon as possible.”
“It’s critical infrastructure upgrades like these that ensure the safety of both motorists and residents,” New York State Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski added. “I look forward to continuing to work with DOT to address any future infrastructure needs throughout Rockland. Maintaining our state roads and local infrastructure is paramount.”
